PHRASEOLOGISM IN FICTION: FEATURES OF INTERPRETATION IN UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION

The urgency of the phraseologisms translation question is predetermined by the great interest and ambiguous evaluation of phraseology among scholars. Also, its wealth, diversity, expressiveness and widespread use in fiction make us talking about this issue. There exist several approaches to translating phraseological units, and we are to study them.

Keywords: phraseology, translation, phraseological equivalent, functional analogue, tracing, descriptive translation.

The best way to translate phraseologism is to convey phraseologism by phraseological equivalent . This is possible when English and Ukrainian languages have borrowed a phraseologism from other languages:

Strike while the iron is hot. — Куй залізо, поки гаряче.

An old dog will learn no new tricks. — Старого пса новим фокусам не навчиш.

Translation by functional analogue, that is, the use in the Ukrainian language of phraseological units that have the same meaning but which are constructed in different ways. Such translation should bear in mind that Ukrainian image must be neutral in national color:

Can the leopard change his spots? — Природу не виправиш./ Горбатого могила справить./ Кривого дерева не виправиш.

A living dog is better than a dead lion. — Краще синиця в руках, ніж журавель в небі.

Every family has a black sheep. — Нема лісу без вовка, а села без лихого чоловіка.

The use of phraseological phrases in fiction is a matter of style, and the task of the translator is to preserve that style. And so, despite all the difficulties of translation phraseologisms, they must be translated accordingly.

There is another major problem with the translation of phraseologisms — “literalism”, which means “word by word”, or “literally”, but when translating this method takes on a completely different meaning. “Tracing” is really a word-by-word translation, instead, “literalism” is a translation that distorts the meaning of phraseology in this text or copies a lexical or grammatical structure. In such cases the translation of phraseologisms may look very strange. That is why translators should be careful with such a method of translation when we speak about phraseology. E.g. it is better not to translate “Pull someone’s leg” literally, because we will lose its meaning (to joke at someone). However, sometimes such translation is adequate:

One swallow does not make a summer. – Одна ластівка не робить літа.

If English phraseologism does not have an equivalent or analog in Ukrainian, and tracing translation could lead to obscure literalism, the translator must refuse to convey imagery and use descriptive translation — explaining the content of the phraseological unit by using a free combination of words:

One man’s meat is another man’s poison. — Про смаки не сперечаються.

Finally, it is worth learning phraseologisms, because knowledge of their features and knowledge of the methods of their translation into the Ukrainian language, undoubtedly, increases the efficiency of working with fiction texts, allows speakers to deepen their knowledge about the culture and traditions of the native speakers and helps to learn adequately and to express our own thoughts using phraseologisms.
