SENSORY LEXIS IN THE NOVEL “DANDELION WINE” BY R.BRADBURY

Abstract. The article considers types of sensory lexical units, their role in reflecting the author’s perception of the world and the importance of sensory lexis in creating aesthetic value of the fiction text.

Key words: sensory lexis, visual perception, sensory perception, vocabulary of taste, gustatory lexical units, perception on sense of smell, odorative vocabulary, tactile vocabulary, stylistic features

Sensory perception is one of the main sources of knowledge about the world around us. Firstly, the world is perceived by the senses, and then its categorization is based on people’s own experience and stereotypes of national culture. The semantic field of sensations is one of the most common in language. This is because the subjective experience of a person is based on the information obtained through five senses: sight, hearing, touch, perception of smell and taste. Sensory lexis is the verbal conceptualization of a sphere of sensory perception which has encoded all the information about the world surrounding us. [1, p.38]

The functioning of sensory vocabulary in artistic discourse was the subject of research of Ukrainian and foreign scholars (D. Apresian, M. Borysenko,  I.Gaidaenko, M.Hrabovych,V.Kukharenko, N.Moiseeva, L.Ovchinnikova, N.Pelevin, A.Perminova, K.Tuliuliuk, O.Voloshyna, A.Vezhbytska, V.Vinogradov, K.Shapochka, R.Zorivchak).

The text of a work of art is a multidimensional unity of content, which reflects the psychology of the writer, where the idea is realized in literary form, and reflects the unique phenomenon of human consciousness – language. Language through system-functional, semantic, stylistic and other organizations reveals national and individual -linguistic conceptual picture of the world. Sensory vocabulary is a narrow gap through which the flexible mind of the reader penetrates into the inner world of the author. [2, p.88]Therefore, the aim of our research is to consider sensory vocabulary in R. Bradbury’s novel “Dandelion Wine” and define its stylistic functions.

 R.Bradbury’s style is characterized by simplicity of the writing and clarity of thought. Involvement of the author to everything that occurs in the physical and metaphysical world, makes the text extremely rich in sensory lexis, almost every word becomes a sensorical symbol. On the plane of our study sensory lexis is regarded as one of the main means of representation of the artistic picture of the world.

Definition of explicit and implicit meanings that arise as a result of their semantic interaction with other elements of the text, their role in the semantic structure of the text, reflection of the author’s attitude to what is reported finds its reflection in artistic images. [3, p.118] Use of sensory vocabulary, namely a rich palette of colors, a large number of odorative images, a variety of sound images is a characteristic feature of the novel “Dandelion Wine” by R.Bradbury.

Sensory vocabulary has a great expressive potential and acquires a variety of contextual additions to meaning, which increases the role of sensory in the formation of semantic-conceptual and subtextual information, which makes them an important means of creating artistic imagery[4, p.102]

According to the five types of sensory perception, the sensory field is divided into five microfields of senses perceived by touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste, the constituents of which are tactile vocabulary, visual and sound vocabulary, odorative and gustatory lexical units. [5, p.175]

A variety of visual sensory lexis of Ray Bradbury allows within the boundaries of lexico-semantic field define the following conceptual groups of sensorisms:

1) sensorisms denoting the process of visual perception, united by a common archiseme to perceive with the help of eyes;

2) sensorisms, indicating the possibility of this type of perception, combined with the help of arhiseme ‘ability to see’;

3) denoting color, the archiseme ‘that can be seen’;

4) the names of color – the corresponding archiseme ‘can be seen, observed’.

The starting point of the analysis of the embodiment of the author of his sensory worldview within the artistic text can be considered by the use of color vocabulary. [6, p.221]

The strongest human feeling is the vision of the world in color. Color images make noticeable what cannot be expressed with words: mood, feelings, vague, blurred thoughts, etc. In Bradbury’s style we observe syncretism of visual images: … at the chandelier with crystal bobbins gleaming quietly…  The image combines the colour (crystal) and intensity of reflection of this colour (gleaming quietly). [7, p.44]

Sensory lexis is one of the semantic dominants of the novel “Dandelion Wine”.

Knowledge of the symbolism of color, the ability to read a literary text, taking into account the stylistic features of the use of sensory vocabulary to reveal the author’s intention is a necessary element of decoding a literary text and understanding its message and aesthetic value.
