THE USE OF MIND-MAPPING TECHNIQUE IN ESP TEACHING

Mind-mapping as an interactive technique provides an excellent opportunity to create intellectual maps for learning foreign languages. Since outdated methods and means of education are not current requirements and subjects to the trends of rapid development of scientific and technical progress, this encourages the introduction of innovative methods of education, the use and adaptation of these technologies in the educational process [2, p. 5]. The use of mind maps for the development of students’ creative, critical and associative thinking is an innovative method in education.

The issue of mind mapping was investigated by Tony Buzan, Barry Buzan, David Hyerle, Toni Krasnic, Paul Nation, Roger Sperry, who envisaged the practicality of using and applying mind mapping in classes. The use of intellectual associative maps is relevant today, because it serves to increase the efficiency of thinking and memorization of new material among students.

Modern teachers have long since begun to switch to innovative teaching, which, as Raiisa Hryshkova points out in her work “Методика навчання англійської мови за професійним спрямуванням студентів нефілологічних спеціальностей”, “орієнтується на створення умов для студентів займати активну та ініціативну позицію в навчальній діяльності, не тільки “засвоювати” запропонований викладачем (програмою, підручником, посібником) матеріал, а пізнавати світ шляхом активного діалогу з ним, самому шукати відповіді, а не зупинятися на тому, що вже знайдено, як на остаточній істині” [1, p. 135].

Intellectual maps contribute to the development of students’ abilities to organize information and structure their thoughts. That is useful for learning and professional activities. With associative maps, you can learn new topics in English for specific purposes, analyze and evaluate new information and vocabulary. Tony Buzan in his work “The Buzan study skills handbook: The short cut to success in your studies with mind mapping, speed reading and winning memory techniques” defines mind-mapping as follows: “the core study skill for note-taking and note-making, preparing for essays and examinations, and the ground-breaking tool for transforming research and revision planning into smarter and faster activities” [3, p. 138]. Indeed, the associative intellectual maps help to organize ideas, concepts, information and feelings into logical groups, and make them more accessible for perception, imagination and memorization.

Mind mapping is a popular and productive method for organizing information and developing creative thinking. These maps include a central theme to which various ideas and sub-themes related to that theme are added. Associative series of words can be presented in various forms, for example, in the form of a spider, a caterpillar, any other insect, chart or scale.

In addition, mind maps can be combined with other innovative technologies, such as computer programs, interactive tasks or games, which allow to create the effective educational environments. The use of mind maps in classes can contribute to several outcomes. Students will be able to master the vocabulary, expand knowledge on a certain ESP topic, make a plan when writing an essay, use different theses for making a story, and much more.
